BCBS of Mississippi Foundation awards $100k Farmers Market Grant

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation has awarded Walnut Grove more than a $100,000 grant to expand and enhance the town’s farmers market. The $100,605 grant is intended ostensibly to help create a healthier community and provide opportunities for local vendors to sell locally produced produce and goods, according to a release by Mayor Brian Gomillion. Construction of a market pavilion will begin in the coming weeks, the release stated. It was predicted to include defined spaces for vendors with electricity, paved parking, a specialized market café play-ground, and restrooms. The site will be behind the U.S. Post Office and ‘Grove Town Hall, adjacent to the Tuscolameta Walking Trail. “We are extremely grateful to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation for their selection of Walnut Grove’s application to expand and greatly enhance our Farmers Market,” the mayor stated. “Things will progress quickly so that we will be operational in late spring.” Plans are for the market to become a certified market through the Mississippi Department of Agricul-ture and Commerce, headded. Anyone interested in learning more and wishing to sell at the market in late spring, should telephoneTown Hall 601-253-2321ext. 1000 to reserve spaces which will be available on first-come first-serve basis. It was not the first Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation award to thetown this year. “This award comes just a few months after Walnut Grove was selected 2020 Mississippi HealthyHometown in which the foundation awarded $50,000,” said Gomillion. “Our town leadership is committed to providing opportunities for healthier living from recreation exercise to healthier eating and the foundation has recognized this and helping us to achieve.” The first award to the town will go toward “an interactive playground,”dubbed “Treetops,” he said.
Walnut Grove Hosts Two Tree Seminars

Walnut Grove will hosttwo tree-care workshopsoutdoors in February behind town hall at 139 Main St. The first workshop, on tree planting will be Friday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. until noon. Certified arborist in-structors will be Trey De-Loach, Madison Gardenand Landscaping and Dr.Stephen Dicke, ShadyArbor PLLC. The two will demonstrate how to plant trees, amend soil, select and treat containerized seed-lings and give guidance to participants. Participants will plant containerized trees in Roux Field behind town hall.
